British Airways will be changing the way its Executive Club Members collect Avios from 18 October 2023, changing to a revenue-based system. You can read my original article about the change here.
According to BA, they are making “an investment that forecasts an increase of over 20% more Avios from flying being issued to the overall Member base”. However, most people buying cheaper sale or advance tickets will earn less than previously. Business travellers whose travel is paid for by their company who book at the last minute will benefit the most.
One of the ways around this is to book with another oneworld airline (apart from Iberia) as the partner earning rates are unchanged. However, today BA announced that the new way of collecting Avios on flights will also apply to British Airways’ Atlantic joint business partner, American Airlines. This means that Executive Club Members will collect the same Avios, whether their flight is marketed by British Airways or American Airlines.
The eligible spend will continue to include carrier-imposed charges but not taxes or other charges, and, where relevant, the total eligible spend will be converted into GBP to determine the number of Avios collected. Depending on their Tier status, members will collect 6, 7, 8 or 9 Avios per £1 spent.
As previously announced, the new collection model will also apply to flights marketed by Iberia based on the Iberia Plus proposition, which offers 5, 6, 7 or 8 Avios per €1 spent.
Ian Romanis, British Airways’ Director of Retail and Customer Relationship Management, said: “We are pleased to welcome American Airlines into our new proposition, which will strengthen our partnership as we create a more seamless experience between our two airlines. With data showing that the majority of our customers will either collect more or the same number of Avios under the new model, we are looking forward to introducing it and rewarding our Members in a fairer way across the board.”
BA celebrates World Cup
Ahead of this weekend’s World Cup final, British Airways will offer all adult customers in every cabin a glass of bubbles on Sunday’s return home flight from Sydney to Singapore, to raise a toast to the Lionesses making history by reaching this huge milestone. I think this is a nice gesture from BA and I hope that they have something to cheers to by the end of the match!
The flight will start its journey home from Sydney at 2.50pm local time (match starts at 8pm local time), so the crew will be requesting the latest score from the ground to keep customers informed on the results.
BA will also be streaming the game across all their lounges, both in the UK and internationally. So if you are flying on Sunday you won’t miss out on the game when you are in the airport.
