I don’t normally cover economy flights on TLFL, but the offer from BA is worth covering as it is potentially a great deal and could even be a Christmas present suggestion if you have Avios to burn.
British Airways is offering customers the chance to travel to certain destinations for half the number of Avios usually required. The flights must be booked by 17 December and are available on long-haul economy flights from Heathrow or Gatwick to more than 90 long-haul destinations for 50% fewer Avios. You must travel between 4 January and 30 June 2018. You will still have to pay the usual taxes and charges though. It is always worth looking at the price for cash too as sometimes this can be not that much more expensive in a sale.
You can find availability and book reward flights through ba.com/redemption-sale. If you are not sure about travelling economy, one option is to book economy just one way on daytime flights and then come back in Premium Economy or Club when you want to sleep in more comfort on a night time flight.
Some example prices and destinations are:
Example destination | Avios price for return flight now | Avios price for return flight was |
Toronto | 13,000 | 26,000 |
New York | 13,000 | 26,000 |
Boston | 13,000 | 26,000 |
Dubai | 13,000 | 26,000 |
Tampa | 16,250 | 32,500 |
Johannesburg | 16,250 | 32,500 |
Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) | 16,250 | 32,500 |
Fort Lauderdale | 16,250 | 32,500 |
Los Angeles | 16,250 | 32,500 |
Hong Kong | 19,500 | 39,000 |
Shanghai | 19,500 | 39,000 |
New Club World bedding continues rollout
The new Club World catering launched at the beginning of September and you can read my review of the food element of the new service here. I will be reviewing the new White Company bedding and catching up on how the service is progressing in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, BA are beginning to rollout the new bedding and amenity kits to other destinations. From early December both Boston and New York Newark will both have the new bedding and amenity kits. The new food service is also being trialled on the Los Angeles route on certain flights this month.

Wow, the BA reduced Avios is an excellent sale. Wonder if they might do it in business???
They never have before so I wouldn’t hold your breath! Would be amazing if they did though…
As you mention Michele the taxes and charges almost kill the promotion. Taking LGW to TPA in June, the BA cash price for flight and car for a week is £570 per person for two travelling whereas the avios cost for flight alone is 16,250 plus over £360 in cash per person. Unsurprisingly, you can’t redeem a companion voucher either.
Interesting to hear about the companion voucher as that wasn’t clearly stated. I generally think that economy redemptions are a bit pointless in terms of value for money but everyone has different views of the value to them.
Over school holidays can be very good, new year family of 4 around £3000 upwards and only roughly £1000 plus points otherwise to Dubai in economy
Kids gutted not business this time though
Sounds like a decent deal. It will be character building for the kids!!
