Club World to Bangkok
I have been writing about the great ex EU flights on BA over the last few days and today I have yet another option at a bargain price. If you need tier points this could be a good option as you are allowed to ‘transfer’ i.e. change planes up to 5 times meaning you could build in some stops to get extra tier points. I have previously featured the bargains to the US in First (including Hawaii) and Club World fares to Hong Kong and Shanghai from £1243 and yesterday Dubai.
There is a great deal from Amsterdam which is technically available all year but the really cheap fares seem to start from May. The rules of the ticket are pretty much the same as the other ones I have featured:
- Reservations are required at least 14 days before departure.
- Minimum stay requirement is a Saturday night
- Transfers are allowed up to 5 in each direction. 2 in Europe and up to 3 in Asia except China which allows 1 in each direction.
- Stopovers in Europe are allowed at €100 for up to 2 and €200 each for as many as you want.
- Reservations must be made on or before 4 February 2018.
There are 2 drawbacks to flying to Bangkok with BA. Firstly, they currently use the old B777s, my least favourite aircraft long haul on BA. You can read my review of the old B777 here. Secondly, it’s a day flight home which I also dislike. You could look at whether you could get a routine via another Asian city such as Singapore or Kuala Lumpur to get a better aircraft type as well as more tier points. You need to book on British Airways or Iberia tickets to get the price.
Valentine’s room at Hotel du Vin for £30
Hotel Du Vin do some great deals for hotel rooms when you spend a certain amount on food and drink on Sunday nights. Instead of withdrawing the offer for Valentine’s, they have slightly upped the spend requirement but it is still a good deal. This Valentine’s weekend they are offering a room for £30 when you spend £100 on their Valentines menu or £100 on dining in the hotel. Hopefully, by going on Sunday you can avoid the normal overkill and crush on Valentine’s night as well as having a mini break too.
The offer is valid for stays on 11 and 18 February. You can find more details of the offer here.
Eden Roc Miami
If you fancy escaping the grey skies of the UK winter you may wish to consider Miami. The Eden Roc Miami Beach is a resort hotel which was completed in 1955-56. The hotel has been a favourite of distinguished guests such as the Rat Pack, politicians and Hollywood’s top stars. Renovated in 2008, the hotel offers 631 guest rooms, including 96 suites. I stayed there a few years ago when it was part of Marriott Hotels. It now features a Nobu branded tower and the famous Nobu restaurant, alongside the Eden Roc rooms.
Secret Escapes are offering the hotel from £242 for a Deluxe room but you would be better booking the Ocean View Junior Suite for £264 in my opinion. Resort fees and tax are extra but on the days I looked it will £90 cheaper even taking into account the resort fees.
The one thing to be aware of is the location, as it is quite a long walk to South Beach but it is manageable via the lovely boardwalk . You can always break the walk with a quick stop at the Setai for a cocktail, which I can highly recommend. Being further north, the hotel is close to the Bal Harbor designer stores and also about 30 minutes to a large mall if you wanted something a bit less pricey.
You must be a member to get this, but it is free to join. If use this link you will get £15 credit towards your first booking.

Hi Michelle
On the Ba to Shanghai ex eu route could I start my journey from Luxembourg but finish it on the way back in London and not bother getting on the Luxembourg connecting flight ? I only have hand luggage so I cannot see how they could force me on the connecting flight ?
Thanks David
Hi David. Good question and something I will be covering in more depth shortly. The simple answer is yes you can if you don’t have checked luggage. The only note of caution is that BA take a dim view of this and I wouldn’t risk doing it very often as technically they could go after you for the difference in fares. They haven’t done this as far as I know but I have heard of very rare instances of people getting their exec account closed after dropping the last leg multiple times.
Having done flights from Asia to UK many times I much prefer the day time flights. You probably get up early and arrive late afternoon. Just in time to get home an go straight to bed. We’re usually over any jet lag within 2 days of getting home. The night flights arrive early morning and we then struggle to get through to a normal UK bedtime. Everyone to there own I suppose. Next month is HKT-DOH-LHR arriving in UK at 1800.
Absolutely it is all about what works for you. I get bored on day flights that are very long but quite like the day flights back from the US East Coast as they are fairly short.
