There have been rumours for years that BA were thinking of starting flying to Portland, Oregon and now finally they have come true. I have just been writing about a fantastic deal to Portland with BA/AA in this article!
British Airways will soon become the first airline to offer a year-round direct flight from the UK to Portland, Oregon. From June 1, 2020, the airline will launch a five-per-week service to the city from Heathrow Terminal 5. Portland is one of my favourite US cities which has that small-town feel. It’s near the Oregon wine producing area and is also the home of lots of local craft breweries if you enjoy a tipple.
In addition to its acclaimed international food scene, Portland is home to a thriving festival and music culture, as well as a vast range of outdoor activities from paddleboarding to year-round skiing, thanks to its two rivers and nearby Mount Hood. Portland is also consistently ranked as one of the most livable cities in the US, with more than 1,200 technology companies based in the metropolitan region.
Flights to Portland will depart on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the route will be operated by one of British Airways’ newest aircraft, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (no First sadly). Return fares will start from £459 in World Traveller, £758 in World Traveller Plus and £1399 in Club World and are available to book now on ba.com.
Flight number | Sector | Days of week | Dept time | Arrival time |
BA299 | LHR – PDX | Mon, Weds, Fri, Sat, Sun | 15.05 | 16.55 |
BA298 | PDX – LHR | Mon, Weds, Fri, Sat, Sun | 18.45 | 12.10 |
Avios availability has been added but you will need to go to the standard reward flight “book with Avios” portal. If you try the more generic search on BA or Reward Flight Finder or Seat Spy, Portland has not been added yet. Business class redemptions cost from 125000 Avios + £ 682.15 off-peak. I can plenty of availiblity in business class.
Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Director of Networks and Alliances said: “Portland will be a fantastic addition to our route map. As a major technology and innovation hub the city is drawing ever-increasing numbers of international visitors. Since 2015 we’ve launched routes to Pittsburgh, Charleston, Nashville, New Orleans and San Jose, and this is key to our joint business strategy which is growing across North America. We’re confident the route will be warmly welcomed by both business and leisure travellers.”
As well as the joint business with American Airlines, customers will be able to also benefit from British Airways’ enhanced network and relationship with Alaska Airlines to provide seamless travel and mileage earning opportunities beyond Portland.

You called this one a while ago Michelle! I’m sure you’ll take advantage of this flight and I wish you a great journey to the City of Roses!
Oops, sorry, I spelled you name wrong Michele.
Thanks Michele, just booked into Portland having been eyeing up a redemption to the west coast for September, cheapest place on the west coast by around £1000 for the day we wanted. How fortuitous, we’ll save the avios for another day.
