Etihad extends Covid cover
A number of airlines including Virgin and Emirates have been offering top-up insurance to cover covid for their customers. Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has extended its COVID-19 global wellness insurance cover until 1 October 2021. You can read details of the available cover here.
Martin Drew, Senior Vice President Sales & Cargo, Etihad Airways, said: “Extending Etihad’s COVID-19 global wellness insurance reinforces the effectiveness of Etihad Wellness, the airline’s health and hygiene programme. It’s an added benefit automatically provided to all guests – no exceptions.
“As Etihad continues to gradually expand its services to up to 60 destinations this spring, the airline wants to instil confidence to travel and hopes this additional cover will reassure guests Etihad is doing everything it can to keep them safe and protected.”
Passengers who are diagnosed with COVID-19 during their trip won’t have to worry about medical expenses or quarantine costs when they fly with Etihad. For new bookings, simply book your next flight on etihad.com, or via the app. Etihad currently has some good fares from the UK which I covered here.

Aer Lingus given approval for UK-US flights
I previously reported that Irish airline Aer Lingus were planning to start US flights from the UK this summer. The US Transportation Department (DOT) has now granted tentative approval for it to begin selling its planned UK-US routes. They still need final approval which will be given when the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issues Aer Lingus (U.K.) with an air operator’s certificate.
Aer Lingus plan to operate transatlantic service from Manchester (MAN) to Boston (BOS), New York John F Kennedy (JFK) and Orlando (MCO) with two Airbus A330-300s and two A321LRs.
A new subsidiary called Aer Lingus (U.K.) Ltd has been set up to fly the routes, but the UK-US flights will operate under the Aer Lingus name and have the EI designator code.
Aer Lingus is not part of Oneworld despite being owned by BA’s owner IAG. You only get BA tier points on BA codeshare flights on Aer Lingus.

Good news. I read also that because of the approval of EI joining the AA/BA/IB/FI joint venture, you will get tier points….?
Yes, but WILL Aer Lingus join OneWorld as a result of this so that tier points can be earned?
Unlikely I’d say.
