Many hotel chains have special benefits for travel agents that are not available except through these particular programs when you book with a specialist agent. For example, Hyatt has a program called Prive and Marriott has one called Accolades. These offer perks such as upgrades, room credit and other special offers depending on the hotel. Plus you can still earn points and get status benefits.
IHG has just launched two new programs called the IHG Luxury Collection and IHG Lifestyle Collection. Each collection offers a tailored service and a variety of exclusive benefits. Regent, InterContinental, and Kimpton hotels (outside the US) are part of the Luxury Collection and Kimpton (US-only) and Indigo being in the new Lifestyle Collection. In addition to the new benefits, both collections remove the 2-night minimum requirement.
The rates that you book are more expensive than some advance purchase rates, as these are the flexible rates. Obviously, at the moment that’s very handy, plus the benefits nearly always outweigh the extra cost.
Here is an overview of the 2 new programs:

I have signed up for IHG membership and I must say it is not worth it: I signed up whilst we were in Sydney Australia, Intercontinental hotel. Most of the hotels rooms from IGH are old and run down; service is not consistent from hotel to hotel; the best hotel service we had was when we visited Romania. When we visited Bora Bora and I was still a member there were no upgrades or complimentary anything in fact they take you around the property with your luggage instead of accommodating you first at your room. The over water bangalo was substandard. My apologies to bomb your article but in my opinion it is not worth it.
