Virgin Atlantic to resume Havana, Cuba
Virgin announced on social media today that it would be resuming flights to the Cuban capital from London Heathrow from 1 November 2022. Flights will operate three times a week on a B787-9 aircraft with the older Virgin seats.
Currently reward flights are not available for the Havana route.
More BA route cancellations
British Airways have cancelled further flights past their original stop date of the end of May. As well as short haul routes, there are also some long haul routes hit.
- Miami will go from twice a day to once a day 4 June to 7 September
- Hong Kong is suspended until September
- Tokyo is confirmed as suspended until October
It is expected that the extra capacity on American Airlines Heathrow to Miami flights will be used to ensure all passengers that wish to travel are offered alternatives flights.
Hong Kong to reopen to non residents – with a catch
Despite having issues with high cases and one of the highest death rates from Cbid in the world, Hong Kong finally appears to be beginning to reopen very slowly. First they lifted the inbound flight ban, now they are allowing visitors to enter.
The Government announced that non-Hong Kong residents will be allowed to enter Hong Kong from overseas with effect from 0.00am on May 1 (Hong Kong Time), and rapid antigen tests (RATs) will be added to the “test-and-hold” arrangement at the airport.
As a visitor you be treated exactly the same as a Hong Kong resident. This includes undergoing pre-departure PCR with a negative result and the booking of a designated quarantine hotel (DQH) , being subject to “test-and-hold” upon arrival, and be transferred to DQHs by designated transport to undergo compulsory 7 days quarantine, during which you will be tested multiple times.
I’m pretty sure no one will be booking a holiday there anytime soon, but it is definitely a step in the right direction. The border has been closed to non-residents since 25 March 2020.

Ongoing closure of Russian airspace likely to be a reason for further suspension of TYO/HKG
Yes, also Japan border still closed to overseas tourists. BA stopped taking bookings for Tokyo-London some weeks ago. My bookings were transferred to JAL. My JAL flight from Tokyo to London in late March took a scenic detour over Alaska and Greenland in order to avoid Russian airspace.
Someone else mentioned HKG now been reduced to 7 days quarantine? Worth checking that out…
I used to do RTWs which included LAX-HKG-JNB, but with no stopover in HKG, just a few painless hours enjoying the hospitality of The Wing Lounge. As such I never had to do immigration in HKG as I never technically entered the country. I’m guessing that this would not be possible now, even if I’ve taken a PCR test prior to travel. Any thoughts?
You can still transit subject to some stipulations such as the same ticket and within 24 hours staying airside. Cathay has the rules here
