BA Iberia Qatar partnership
Qatar Airways, British Airways, and Iberia, announed today that they are joining forces. Qatar Airways and British Airways already operate the world’s largest airline joint business covering more than 60 countries but from July, Iberia is joining the partnership.
Iberia will add a new daily service from its hub, Madrid Barajas International Airport, flights to Hamad International Airport starting 11 December 2023. Passengers will be able to connect to more than 200 destinations through the three global airlines. Together, Iberia’s and Qatar Airways’ expanded service will operate three times daily on the route. This is good news for BA Avios collectors and those with Amex companion vouchers. You can now use the vouchers on Iberia (just book through ba.com in the same way), so it means another option for getting to Doha on Avios and then connecting on to a wide range of destinations with Qatar.
Iberia will operate the Airbus A330-200, with 288 seats in Business and Economy cabins. I personally like Iberia’s business class. You can read our review of their A330 business class here.
Iberia CEO, Fernando Candela, commented: “Joining the QJB with Qatar Airways and British Airways is excellent news for our customers. We are really excited about the launch of our Madrid-Doha route. Through QJB hubs in London and Doha, we are building the much-desired bridge between Spain and more than 200 destinations in Asia, Australasia, the Middle-East, and Africa, and offering new opportunities for travelers in both directions. Our country is moving towards a new model of higher-quality tourism and, with the Madrid-Doha launching, we are making a breakthrough.”
extra Avios on BA estore
An easy way to collect Avios (especially with the recent change to spend based earning on flights), is to do all your online shopping via the BA store. It includes lots of travel brands, not just run-of-the-mill shopping. You simply click through to the normal retailer through the estore and then it’s exactly the same as you would normally shop. Always check each retailer’s T&C as there can be some products which are excluded.
There are some special offers on currently for summer:
- Marriott 6 Avios per £1
- Harvey Nichols 15 Avios per £1 (combine with your Amex Platinum offer)
- Booking.com 8 Avios per £1
- Hotels.com 12 Avios per £1
- Deliveroo 10 Avios per £1
- Apple 6 Avios per £1
- John Lewis 6 Avios per £1
- Viator 12 Avios per £1
You can find the special offer page here.
eGate use extended to 10 and 11 year olds
The UK government yesterdaychanged the rules to allow children aged ten and eleven years to use passport eGates at UK airports and on Eurostar. This is good news for families that often face long waits in the normal passport queue due to the age restrictions for children. The idea had been trialled at three major UK airports before they decided to change the age limit.
This summer is set to be the busiest since 2019, with passenger levels returning to 2019 levels.

I booked a return flight through Iberia from Almeria to Male a couple of months ago. The Madrid Doha leg is on Qatar so is this tie up really new? Incidentally booking through Iberia was a lot cheaper than Qatar for basically the same service (I hope)
They are oneworld so previously you could book codeshare flights but now they have introduced a new flight on Iberia to Doha which is new and formed a full partnership separate to oneworld.
