Double Avios on flights with BA
A new BA Avios promotion has launched for double Avios on flights. As usual, you need to understand the rules to make sure you get what you are expecting. British Airways are offering a 100% bonus Avios offer on all flights finishing Friday 19 April 2019.
So what are the key points to know?
- The bonus only applies to flights booked after you have registered for the offer sadly. You need to ensure your executive club number is on the booking when you book it too, not afterwards.
- The 100% bonus Avios is available for up to six flights, plus, for any Member who completes all six flight, they will receive an additional 2019 Avios on top of their double Avios. The bonus Avios are only on the base points excluding any cabin or status bonuses.
- The offer also includes all domestic flights in the UK and within southern Africa, as well as British Airways flights operated American Airlines, Iberia and Finnair when you travel between Europe and North America.
- If you are already an Executive Club member you need to register using this link. A “thank you” message will then be displayed to confirm that your registration has been successful.
- If you are not an Executive Club Member, join the Executive Club using code DAWW19.
- You need to fly the qualifying flights before 23.59 on 31 December 2019. They can be either a one-way (single sector) or a return flight (two sectors) between the point of departure and final destination with no scheduled change of aircraft that must be booked after the Member has registered.
- A Qualifying Flight is (i) a BA prefix on any selling class (excluding Reward flights or upgrades using Avios) or cabin on any BA operated service, or (ii) any flight included as part of a British Airways Holiday package, and (iii) a BA prefix on a transatlantic flight operated by British Airways (BA), American Airlines (AA), Iberia (IB) or Finnair (AY) between Europe and North America.
- The promotion also applies to travel on domestic flights within the UK and southern Africa (operated by Comair), Sunnair and CityFlyer.
- Any other flights operated by any other BA franchises, codeshare partners or oneworld alliance members will not qualify.
- If you change your travel arrangements after the date of booking you will not be eligible for any Avios bonus award unless the revised travel is within the qualifying travel period.

British Airways improvements on the horizon
I previously reported on Alex Cruz’s interview with Business Traveller magazine. A second part has now been published with more insights into BA’s future plans. Some people were offended by Mr Cruz’s photo last time, (!) so I will leave it out for the second part. Again there were some interesting nuggets in the interview which will be of interest to regular BA travellers.
Cleaning
Despite improving cleaning of aircraft with regular deep cleans, there have still been issues reported with unclean aircraft even in first class. BA have implemented changes in the way short-haul aircraft are cleaned on the turnaround but not on long haul. This will be changing in a few weeks with an improved cleaning process.
Call centres
The BA call centres will get new technology and a new telephone system. Although the rollout has started this will take at least two years to complete! Once done it will mean that you should no longer have to give the ridiculous amounts of personal information that you do currently to pass security. The system should recognise you instead if you are calling from your regular number. Currently, they are trying to give call staff more discretion to use their own judgement rather than rigidly stick to process when it is not the logical way to help a customer.
Disruption management
Once all aircraft are connected to Wi-Fi and most cabin crew are equipped with a device such as an iPad then BA plan to make changes to itineraries if there is an issue even once you are airborne. The crew would then alert you to the fact and you can check your app to see the changes. They estimate this should be in place in the next year or so.
Buy on board for Gold and above Executive Club members
Last year BA were trialling giving Gold and above status holders something free when travelling in short-haul economy. Currently, everything has to be paid for except tap water. They are still considering the idea but don’t feel they have a workable solution yet.
Heathrow T5 lounges
BA have been saying for a long time that they will refresh the lounges at T5. Although they recently did the Concorde Room there is still sadly no date for the other lounges. In the meantime, they will look at service and having more staff to ensure the lounges are cleaner.
Gatwick
Last year BA bought failed airline Monarch slots and have introduced increased frequencies and new destinations. Alex indicated that they may add a couple more long-haul aircraft which could mean some new destinations.

Why can’t airlines recognise that people with Celiac disease can also be vegetarian? I fly frequently, both short and long haul, and usually in business class, and rarely get anything to eat except the salad starter and a small fruit salad. I have just completed four Cathay flights in Business and while the staff were great, on each one my diet consisted of fruit and cheese which can be somewhat lacking on a thirteen hour flight. I mostly fly BA and it’s a similar situation, as they will have either prepared a pasta meal for me if I choose the vegetarian option, and chicken if I choose gluten free – there is no option for choosing actual gluten free vegetarian.
