Marriott’s “Suite Night Awards” positive changes
If you have Platinum status in Marriott, you can choose to receive 5 Suite Night Awards every year. This allows you to request an upgrade to a suite or better rooms before your stay. It’s not guaranteed, but outside the US, I have always been successful so far.
Marriott has announced that it is changing its “Suite Night Awards,” which will now be called “Nightly Upgrade Awards” from early 2024.
There will be more choice of brands that you can use the awards in:
- The Ritz-Carlton,
- EDITION,
- Aloft,
- Element,
- Protea Hotels
Marriott will also have nearly 20% more premium rooms, and suites available for upgrades with features like oceanfront rooms, balconies, and extra space as well as suites.
While this sounds great, make sure you look at which upgrades you are willing to accept, as personally, I would not accept a room with a balcony on an SNA if there were no other differences. You can select as many or as few room types as you want. Obviously, the more you choose, the more chance you have of getting one of them.
The only downside to the changes is that you will now only receive notification regarding the status of the Nightly Upgrade Awards request closer to check-in, starting three days before arrival instead of five.
Nightly Upgrade Awards will not be redeemable at the following Brands/brand extensions: All-Inclusive Resorts, Bulgari, Design Hotels™, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy®, Marriott Executive Apartments®, Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club®, The Ritz-Carlton Club®, Ritz-Carlton Reserve®, The Ritz-Carlton Residences, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Sheraton Vacation Club, The Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale, and Westin Vacation Club.

Buying Hyatt status night credits
There is also an interesting offer to get status nights by buying Mr and Mrs Smith gift cards. If you would definitely use the gift cards, this would be a better option than a mattress run where you are throwing money away. Mr & Mrs Smith are due to join World of Hyatt soon, but there is no firm date yet, although the sale to Hyatt is complete.
When you buy Mr & Mrs Smith gift cards, you earn 5 Base Points per $1 spent as well as standard elite tier bonuses on Mr & Mrs Smith gift cards. You also earn 1 tier qualifying night credit (up to 60 night credits) toward World of Hyatt tier status for every $300 spent on Mr & Mrs Smith gift cards.
You can also use your World of Hyatt points to purchase Mr & Mrs Smith gift cards. A $100 E-Gift Card costs 8,333 points.

Of course they can open it to as many brands as they like but if the hotels say the stay isn’t eligible, I have three different brand stays in February and none are eligible, I don’t see this as much of an improvement.
