Wine Flyer Triple Avios
An easy way to collect Avios is to buy wine through The Wine Flyer, which is an IAG Loyalty company. I previously wrote about their offer for wine subscriptions. Currently there is a 3500 Avios bonus on your first order.
They now have another good offer which gives triple Avios on purchases until 14 August 2024. I have bought wine from the company before and been pleased with the service. I like the fact that you can choose wines individually or buy select mixed cases as well as spirits.
You will collect up to 15 Avios for every £1 you spend on the selection of wines, sparkling wines, Champagnes, and spirits included on this page.
The Avios generally post immediately and, at most, take up to 30 days, so this can be a good way to top up your Avios quickly without buying them.

Liquids rule coming back to Europe
Hot on the heels of the UK reintroducing the hated 100ml liquids rule, Europe is doing the same. From 1 September, even at airports like Amsterdam that have the new scanners, all liquids, aerosols, and gels, as well as pastes, lotions, and cosmetics in hand luggage, must be 100ml or less at all EU airports for security.
This is supposed to be a “temporary change”. There are a number of airports in Europe that already have the new CT scanners, and this change is expected to bring security delays at many airports. It is not totally clear what the issue with the new scanners is which was initially brought to light in the UK. At Birmingham, it was initially said it was the high rejection rate, but this has not affected other scanners. A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “The temporary reintroduction of the 100ml liquid restriction at some airports is to allow time to further improve systems.” How long that will take is anyone’s guess.
Meanwhile, in the US, they are not expected to relax their rules until at least 2040! However, given that you can get TSA Pre-check which allows you to at least keep everything in your bag and not take shoes or coats off, there is at least some concession for regular travellers. Personally, I’d like something similar in Europe alongside a Global Entry program.

From my experience in BHX and DUB the rejection rate is very high on the new scanners – including of the normal bag of toiletries that are all less than 100ml and have travelled around the world. It was a queue 10 deep of literally 80% of scans in the fast-track queue – which defeats the object of the queues. Similar in DUB – it’s not been a great deployment of this new technology
It’s interesting how it only seems to have happened at certain airports whereas at Heathrow I’ve been through a few times and not had any issues
