Virgin Atlantic new reward flight tool
I previously wrote about a new Chrome (browser) extension, Smart Redemptions, that will show you the cost of an Avios redemption in Google Flights and whether it is considered good value or not. The extension supports a number of airlines on Avios including booking with Qatar. Now they have a new airline available which is Virgin Atlantic.
To use the extension you will need to be using Chrome as your browser and then install the Smart Redemptions Chrome Extension. When you first go to Google Flights, you may need to grant permission to use the extension. If you find it doesn’t show the prices straight away, try manually refreshing your page, and it will usually show within a minute or two.
Here is an example of what you will see:
The ability to actually see how many reward seats are available is also coming soon. I like Virgin’s tool to find seats which is available here and free to use.
4 x Avios (2000) with Hertz car hire and 10% off
Qatar Airways has a special offer to earn 4X Avios on your Hertz car rental plus you get 10% off. Book any vehicle by 31 July 2024 for up to 28 days. You can rent until 30 September 2024. This offer means that you collect 2,000 Avios instead of the usual 500 Avios.
You will need to be a member of Qatar Privilege Club, but once you have linked your BA account, it is instantaneous to transfer your Avios between accounts.
The terms and conditions also state that you have to present your Privilege Club membership card to get the miles started although I am sure your number would be sufficient.
You can find the Qatar offer page here.
eBay big Nectar changes – some for the better!
EBay has been a handy way to earn Nectar points to convert into Avios with regular promotions for extra points. This is now coming to an end, and you will no longer be able to link your Nectar account to your eBay account to earn points automatically. From 1 September 2024 you will no longer be able to collect and spend Nectar points on eBay the way you do now.
From 1 September 2024 onwards, you can still use any vouchers you have on eBay until their expiration date. Then, if you want to collect Nectar points, you will need to use the Nectar app and will collect 2 points for every £1 spent at eBay when you shop via Nectar. This is actually better than the current rate of 1 Nectar point per £1 spent.
To collect points you will need to go to the Nectar app and search for Ebay and then click the “Shop online” button to take you to Ebay.
There is more information on this page.

‘Taxes – unknown’ make the Chrome extension tool fairly useless for Virgin flights. If you need to pay up to £2,000 return on top of your points for a redemption then the value you are receiving from your points is going to decrease dramatically.
Not sure why they didn’t add that before launching.
I don’t think the two points per £1 change for a click-through is a change for the better unfortunately. It’s really a sly way to stop people getting a double dip on cashback.
Previously you could click through Topcashback or Quidco for a bit of cashback (usually 1% unless there’s a promo) AND then collect your one Nectar point per £1 on top from the linked Nectar card. As a Nectar point is worth half a penny, you effectively got 1.5% cashback this way.
Now you will have to choose EITHER 2 Nectar per £1 for a Nectar click-through (effectively 1% given that a Nectar point value is 0.5p), OR your 1% via a cashback site.
