Qatar Airways have launched a short sale as I had expected, with some interesting ex EU bargains. I expected the sale as a direct response to those that may be put off flying Qatar by the current diplomatic crisis between Qatar and neighbouring countries. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain all abruptly severed all ties with Qatar on June 5, including all flights between the countries and Doha. They are also not permitting Qatar flights to overfly their airspace, which will lead to increased flight times on some routes.
If you are willing to take the risk that tensions don’t escalate further, you can, of course, get BAEC tier points and Avios on Qatar. In fact, one return flight in business class to Asia on Qatar would almost get you to BAEC Silver with 560 tier points. Qatar are due to launch the new Qsuite on 24th June 2017 from London, which will arguably be the best business class seat in the sky.
At the time of publishing, as usual, the Qatar sale web pages were not functioning correctly in several countries. If you go to the sale pages and don’t see a fare destination listed, it is probably worth a search anyway.
If you have never done an Ex EU flight you can read my guide here.
In this post:
The sale details
- Sales period: until 16 June 2017 22.59
- Travel period: until 14 March 2018
- Blackout period 15 December 2017 to 15 January 2018
UK sale
As usual there are no massive bargains in the UK sale but if you don’t want to do ex EU, there are reduced prices but you would probably find it cheaper with Finnair to Asia in many cases. Most prices to the Far East are around £1800-2200. If you are looking from the UK, it is worth looking at all the UK departure points, as prices can vary widely between them. You may also want to look at the accommodation inclusive fare trick I talked about here which can save you several hundred pounds on UK fares.
The UK sale page is here.
